The Empowered Women series of posts are written for women, by women. We interview some incredible women from all walks of life. They will be sharing their wisdom, experiences, and amazing work to inspire us to live our best lives.

This week we are interviewing the wonderful Katie Patterson, entrepreneur and mom, who founded WITHLOVEfromKatie in 2016 and makes her beautiful jewelery pieces from her home in California.

Katie Patterson

Creator & Founder of WITHLOVEfromkatieINC

Hey Katie! Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and what you do?

Hi, I’m Katie, Owner/Creator of With love from Katie Inc. I make custom hand-stamped bar necklaces and bracelets. Everything I do is made by me and stamped letter by letter so no two are alike. I love to use local materials and support other small businesses. Most of my bars and chains I use are from another small businesses right here in the small town of Temecula, Ca.

What does empowerment mean to you?

I personally believe empowerment can vary from person to person. My empowerment is just having the opportunity to try something. You don’t even have to succeed, it’s just the chance to give it a go. I have poured better portions of my day into my business and I feel so lucky to even be given the opportunity. That alone makes me feel so powerful.

What challenges have you faced in recent years?

I would say the main challenge I have faced was just expecting success over night.

You want it all to come so quickly and the reality is the first two years of owning a business is your make it or break it time. I had to learn that slow and steady wins the race. Do a little each day and continue to build the blocks to get noticed and get your product into the hands of real people. I have been in business a year and a half now and I still feel like I have so long to go, but I am finally starting to build my brand.

How have you overcome them?

I feel like I still haven’t overcome some expectations. I try and shoot for the stars and sometimes can get ahead of myself. Its super easy to do with the pressure of social media and everyone seeming like owning a business is a walk in the park. Its not, not even close. There is so much that goes into it. I had to convince myself to that its ok to find a bigger brand to relate to and use that as an example of you want for yourself. There will always be challenges!

What does Self-love mean to you?

Self love means accepting yourself for who you are as an individual. Having respect for yourself and stop comparing yourself to others.

It’s okay to be different. In fact being different can really set you apart and get a great response from people.

Again, I feel like social media can give us a false reality and cause us to get down on ourselves. Its a blessing and a curse. I feel good knowing that I am where I want to be in life and that is very comforting. I just have to remind myself to stick to my own path and tell my own story.

How do you look after yourself day to day?

Honestly, I always put myself last. Everyday I put my kids and husband first, then I can focus on myself. I get up and take care of everyone in my family and then I feel like I can finally think about what I need to accomplish for that day. Often I take care of “life” before I can sit down and focus on work. Its a huge balance, but it’s the beauty of being self employed. I am able to still be a focused wife, mom and entrepreneur.

What do you do if you go off track?

One of my favorite quotes of all time is, “If you get tired learn to rest. Not to quit.” – Banksy

I seriously have to live by that. There has been so many moments when I question, “Why am I doing this?”. I could just be home with my kids and not have the extra stress. Then I recharge my batteries and it all comes rushing back. I love what I do. I love having an outside purpose other then being a mom and a wife. I get to be a business owner! How many people get to say that? Its pretty cool if you think about it! I like to call myself a momprenuer.

What advice would you give to other women to help them feel more empowered?

I would have to say, just know you are just as good as the rest of them.

Be confident. Know your worth. Know that what you have to give is quality and the best to your ability. Always be willing to learn along the way. None of us know it all, not even close! You have to keep an open mind and an open heart. Stay ahead of the punch and always be thinking about whats next and long term goals. Where do you see yourself in 3 months? 6 months? A year? Share your highs and lows with others and you would be surprised how many other people will be honest about their hard moments. Take a break when you need to and then hit the pavement when your ready to work.

What’s your favourite dessert?

Oh man, that is a hard one! I would have to say triple chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. If we ever go to dinner and they have this on the menu, I have to get one to go. So good! Im pretty sure I devour the whole thing to myself. I have always had the worst sweet tooth.
